Summary

Garner gathers a literary chorus to capture the joys of reading and eating in this comic, personal classic。 Reading and eating, like Krazy and Ignatz, Sturm und Drang, prosciutto and melon, Simon and Schuster, and radishes and butter, have always, for me, simply gone together。 The book you’re holding is a product of these combined gluttonies。Dwight Garner, the beloved New York Times critic and the author of Garner’s Quotations, serves up the intertwined pleasures of books and food。 The product of a lifetime of obsessively reading, eating, and every combination therein, The Upstairs On Eating, Reading, Reading About Eating, and Eating While Reading is a charming, emotional memoir, one that only Garner could write。 In it, he records the voices of great writers and the stories from his life that fill his mind as he moves through the sections of the day and of this breakfast, lunch, shopping, the occasional nap, drinking, and dinner。Through his lifelong infatuation with these twin joys, we meet the man behind the pages and the plates, and a portrait of Garner, eager and insatiable, emerges。 He writes with tenderness and humor about his mayonnaise-laden childhood in West Virginia and Naples, Florida (and about his father’s famous peanut butter and pickle sandwich), his mind-opening marriage to a chef from a foodie family (“Cree grew up taking leftover frog legs to school in her lunch box”), and the words and dishes closest to his heart。 This is a book to be savored, though it may just whet your appetite for more。

This is squarely in my sweet spot。 One of my two favorite book reviewers writes a book about food and reading, my two favorite pastimes。 My two favorite book reviewers are Michael Dirda in the Washington Post and Dwight Gardner in the New York Times。 They both love books and are happy when they find a book which they can recommend。 They always stay focused on their job of reviewing the book rather than showing how smart they are or writing an editorial on the book's subject。 Most importantly, at This is squarely in my sweet spot。 One of my two favorite book reviewers writes a book about food and reading, my two favorite pastimes。 My two favorite book reviewers are Michael Dirda in the Washington Post and Dwight Gardner in the New York Times。 They both love books and are happy when they find a book which they can recommend。 They always stay focused on their job of reviewing the book rather than showing how smart they are or writing an editorial on the book's subject。 Most importantly, at the end of their reviews, I know if I want to read the book or not。 They do all this with humor, dashes of wit, smart writing and a good amount of common sense。 This book by Gardner is a pleasing mélange of autobiography, food writing, selections from Gardner's massive collection of food quotes and stories, food memories and a rousing defense of enjoying good old-fashioned food。 The pleasant surprise to me was that Garner tells us that, like Michael Dirda, he grew up in a house with almost no books, in a family that was not literary in the least。 It is intriguing that these two passionate bookmen grew up without books。 They both became passionate readers as young teenagers and never turned back。 Gardner's autobiographical bits are revealing。 He was a big kid and has struggled, often unsuccessfully, with weight his whole life。 He knows it is not a good thing, but he seems to have decided that being overweight is a fair price to pay for eat allot of good food and drinking allot of good alcohol。 This is not an anguished story about body shaming。 Gardner is full of great stories about eating, from the 50-course molecular gastronomy dinner he was invited to, (he sums it up as "a supposedly fun thing I'll never do again。") to a fond memory of a scrambled eggs and cut-up hot dogs breakfast in a Virginia diner。What makes the whole casserole special is the literary stuffing。 Garder has compulsively collected quotes, stories, and lines from his reading through his whole career。 His last book was a wonderful collection of quotes。 In this book he has multiple literary stories, quotes and tales to complement his discussion of any subject。 He says, for example, "I'm ridiculed by my family for my inability to pick watermelons。" He follows it up with quotes and stories from the essayist/novelist Elif Batuman, the essayist Janet Malcolm, the memoirist Audre Lorde, Cormac McCarthy, and the memoirist Eugene Walter, all on various thoughts on the subject of watermelon。 The obvious thing is to say that this is a buffet of food thoughts, but it is more mixed up then a buffet。 It is more a relish or piccalilli of food thoughts。 The chapters on breakfast, lunch, shopping, taking a swim or a nap, drinking and dinner are each packed with bits and pieces of tasty stuff。 Samuel Johnson; "A cucumber should be well sliced, and dressed with pepper and vinegar, and then thrown out as good for nothing。"Josh Ozersky: A hamburger recipe。 "Season it liberally with salt, and when I say liberally, I mean like Noam Chomsky。"Garner has some fine lines。"The worst thing about death is that you can't take a book with you。"Lunch "in the sort of place where the forks are heavy and the plates light"。"When my kids where young, I kept gingersnaps in the house, selfishly, because it was a type of cookie they avoided。" (I thought I was the only one who did that。)This is a stop and laugh and/or ponder every page book。 。。。more

I like to read while I eat, though it probably makes my eating less than the optimal experience it might be if I wasn't distracted by the reading。 On the other hand, I try hard not to eat while I read。 Sitting on the couch with a book while I snack is a recipe for overeating unhealthy foods。 Musing about eating and reading was an interesting idea for a book。 I liked Mr。 Garner's omnivorous tastes in both books and food。 He likes the fine quality items in both arenas, but does not shy away from t I like to read while I eat, though it probably makes my eating less than the optimal experience it might be if I wasn't distracted by the reading。 On the other hand, I try hard not to eat while I read。 Sitting on the couch with a book while I snack is a recipe for overeating unhealthy foods。 Musing about eating and reading was an interesting idea for a book。 I liked Mr。 Garner's omnivorous tastes in both books and food。 He likes the fine quality items in both arenas, but does not shy away from the pleasures of junk。 I also liked his Southern voice。 It felt like home to me。But in the end, this book is just an endless compendium of bits and pieces of books that deal with food and eating。 It must have taken a ton of research to find and organize all of this material。 But in the end, the overall effect is very light weight。 It was tasty, but not nutritious。 。。。more

This is a fun book (somewhat memoir) about food and eating in books and while reading and…honestly I’m not sure。 The author is a writer and lifelong reader and foodie。 The number of books that he references is remarkable。 I read an ARC that didn’t have the finished index but I’m hoping there is a list at the end。 He basically just jumps from book to book and it is a bit whip lash inducing but also highly impressive and entertaining。 This was very enjoyable reading experience。 I received a digita This is a fun book (somewhat memoir) about food and eating in books and while reading and…honestly I’m not sure。 The author is a writer and lifelong reader and foodie。 The number of books that he references is remarkable。 I read an ARC that didn’t have the finished index but I’m hoping there is a list at the end。 He basically just jumps from book to book and it is a bit whip lash inducing but also highly impressive and entertaining。 This was very enjoyable reading experience。 I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley。 。。。more

What a good read!!!! I've been reading Garner for a long time and this book did NOT disappoint me。 It's really more about reading while eating than any of the other three items in the subtitles, but OMG。 Now I get to go back through the book to see whose writing about food I still need to read。 I'm so happy he wrote this, and equally happy I knew enough to read it as soon as it became available。 What a good read!!!! I so enjoyed this book about “eating, reading, reading about eating, and eating while reading!” Author Dwight Garner has really done his homework as he talks about famous authors, their books, and comments they have made, all regarding food and drink。 Garner, himself a journalist, book reviewer, food critic and lover, has accumulated hundreds of quotes about food but also adds in some of his favorite life memories when food was an important “ingredient。” He divides the book into chapters: Breakf I so enjoyed this book about “eating, reading, reading about eating, and eating while reading!” Author Dwight Garner has really done his homework as he talks about famous authors, their books, and comments they have made, all regarding food and drink。 Garner, himself a journalist, book reviewer, food critic and lover, has accumulated hundreds of quotes about food but also adds in some of his favorite life memories when food was an important “ingredient。” He divides the book into chapters: Breakfast, Lunch, Shopping, Swim or Nap, Drinking, and Dinner。 It feels like a day in which many people express their opinions about how much food and drink have impacted their lives。It was fun, witty, educational, and scrumptious! A compendium of great quotes and stories about eating , drinking , and napping。 What more can you want。 Garner must have read every book, poem, memoir that touches on eating and drinking because he quotes great lines, stories and poem about those activities profusely through his book。 And they are fabulous。 This couple with the telling of his food experiences growing up and as an adult combine to make this book entertaining and informative。 Highly recommended。
